Frequently Asked Questions

How do I download the pictogram catalog?
When you first open PictoSearch, the onboarding flow guides you through selecting your languages and downloading the catalog. Choose at least one language, pick your preferred skin tone and hair color defaults, and the app will download all pictogram metadata. Images download in the background. You can start searching as soon as the metadata is ready.
How does the search work?
Type one or more words separated by commas in the search bar (e.g., "house, dog, water"). PictoSearch finds matching pictograms for each word and displays them in a grid. All searching happens locally on your device, so it works without an internet connection.
How do I customize a pictogram?
Tap any pictogram in your search results to open the customizer. You can change skin tone (5 options), hair color (7 options), action tense (past, present, future), toggle plural mode, or mark it as crossed out. The preview updates in real time.
How do I save pictograms to my camera roll?
Tap the "Save All to Camera Roll" button at the bottom of the screen. PictoSearch saves every pictogram in your current search with your chosen customizations. The app will ask for camera roll permission the first time.
Can I add more languages later?
Yes! Go to Settings and tap "Add Language." You can download additional languages at any time and delete languages you no longer need. At least one language must remain installed.
How much storage does PictoSearch use?
The full catalog with all images for one language uses approximately 200-300 MB. You can check exactly how much space is being used in Settings, which shows the pictogram count, downloaded images, and total disk usage.
Does PictoSearch work offline?
Yes! After the initial catalog download, searching works completely offline. You only need internet to download the catalog, add new languages, update the catalog, or fetch customized variants that haven't been cached yet.
What are ARASAAC pictograms?
ARASAAC is a pictogram library created by Sergio Palao for the Government of Aragon (Spain). It's the most widely used pictogram set in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) worldwide, distributed under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license.

Quick Tips

🔤

Use Commas

Separate words with commas to find multiple pictograms at once. "eat, drink, sleep" returns all three.

🎨

Set Defaults

Set your preferred skin tone and hair color in Settings so every search uses your defaults.

📱

Batch Save

Build your full search query first, then tap "Save All" once. Much faster than one by one.
